Exploring the Intersection of Art and Science Through Portraits at MIT

Herlinde Koelbl’s evocative portrait series “Fascination of science” reveals the human spirit behind groundbreaking research, bringing to light the passions and journeys of scientists shaping our future.
Artistic Portraits Illuminating Scientific Journeys
German photo artist Herlinde Koelbl captures the essence of researchers by intertwining their faces with handwritten scientific concepts and personal reflections on their palms. This innovative approach spotlights not only their appearance but also their motivations, inspirations, and the material and science ideas that fuel their work. Messages like “learn from failures!” and “make malaria history!” enrich these portraits with emotional depth and insight.
Exhibition Venue & MIT’s Research Vision
The exhibition is housed in the Public Galleries of the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at MIT, a hub renowned for blending biology with technology to combat diseases like cancer. This setting echoes MIT’s interdisciplinary spirit and the motto “mind and hand,” highlighting the institute’s commitment to advancing scientific discovery through collaboration and innovation.
“Science is not just a formula or data—it is a tapestry of human stories woven by curiosity and perseverance.”
Featuring Leading Minds in Science
The portraits showcase eminent scientists affiliated with MIT such as Sangeeta Bhatia, Ed Boyden, Sallie “Penny” Chisholm, Wolfgang Ketterle, Robert Langer, and Robert Weinberg. Internationally acclaimed figures including George Church, Jennifer Doudna, Emmanuelle Charpentier, and Nobel laureate Carolyn Bertozzi (2022) are also featured, representing a wide spectrum of scientific disciplines and achievements.
Visit & Experience
The public is warmly invited to visit Koelbl’s exhibition at the Koch Institute’s Public Galleries, open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The show runs until January 20, offering an inspiring glimpse into the personal side of science formula and research.
