A startup is leading the charge in accelerating direct air carbon removal with an innovative low-power, modular system designed for mass production and global deployment. The system aims to harness renewable energy and strategically locate its facilities near injection wells for effective underground carbon storage.

By engaging third-party auditors to verify the captured carbon dioxide, the startup is also offering carbon credits, helping organizations meet their net-zero emission goals. “Imagine our direct air capture systems as solar panels, but for carbon negativity,” explains the founder, who has a background in scaling production at a renowned electric vehicle manufacturer. “We can stack these units together like Lego blocks to achieve substantial operational scale.”


Scaling Up Carbon Removal Efforts

Currently, the company is constructing its first commercial pilot facility, with plans for a full-scale facility capable of capturing millions of tons of carbon annually. They have already attracted significant funding through pre-sales from prominent organizations eager to support this groundbreaking initiative.

The founder attributes this ambitious endeavor to a strong sense of purpose shaped by personal experiences with climate-related disasters in his youth, including witnessing the devastating effects of hurricanes in his hometown. This realization of climate change’s real-world impacts motivated him to pursue a career focused on creating sustainable solutions.

The Founder’s Vision and Background

While studying at a prestigious institution, he delved into climate change and energy systems, majoring in chemical engineering. Courses in entrepreneurship further sparked his interest in startups, ultimately guiding him to establish the current company with a vision to combat climate change.

Initially, the concept involved attaching carbon capture technology to existing cooling towers for cost efficiency. However, in response to new regulations encouraging larger systems, the design evolved. The new approach combines thousands of modular units, facilitating substantial carbon capture at sites near existing injection wells.

Technical Innovation Behind Each Unit

Each unit is comparable in size to a solar panel, featuring a fan that channels air through specialized materials designed to capture carbon efficiently. Once saturated, the material undergoes a process that collects a concentrated stream of carbon without the need for excessive heating equipment, enhancing overall efficiency.

Noya is currently testing a prototype in Oakland, California, aiming for its first testing facility to be operational by 2024, with plans for future facilities targeting large-scale carbon removal. The goal is ambitious: to remove millions of tons of CO2 from the atmosphere each year.
