MIT Researchers Honored with 2024 National Science and Technology Medals

MIT Faculty Awarded National Medals

The White House has announced that four faculty members from MIT are among the 23 distinguished researchers who have received the nation’s highest accolades for scientists and innovators. Angela Belcher and Emery Brown were honored with the National Medal of Science, while Paula Hammond and Feng Zhang received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation.

MIT Faculty Honored with National Medals

Angela Belcher, a renowned professor of Biological Engineering and Materials Science, was recognized for her innovative designs in materials applicable to solar cells, batteries, and medical imaging. Her work exemplifies the intersection of engineering and biological systems, showcasing significant advancements in technology.

Emery Brown, a prominent figure in Medical Engineering and Computational Neuroscience, has significantly contributed to our understanding of how anesthesia impacts the brain. His research has revolutionized brain monitoring techniques during surgeries, emphasizing the importance of neural oscillations over traditional vital signs.


Innovations in Technology and Medicine

Paula Hammond, an MIT Institute Professor and vice provost for faculty, was awarded for her groundbreaking methods in creating thin films used in drug delivery and wound healing. Her research underscores the potential of nanotechnology in medicine, offering targeted therapies for various conditions.

Feng Zhang, a leading researcher in CRISPR genome-editing technology, has developed molecular tools that hold promise for diagnosing and treating diseases. His innovations are at the forefront of biotechnology, blending scientific discovery with entrepreneurial endeavors to enhance healthcare solutions.

In addition to these faculty members, MIT alumni R. Lawrence Edwards and Noubar Afeyan were also honored. Edwards received the National Medal of Science for his contributions to geochemistry, while Afeyan accepted a National Medal of Technology and Innovation for his role in co-founding Moderna, recognized for developing COVID-19 vaccines.

Emery Brown’s extensive research on anesthesia has unveiled critical insights into how anesthetic drugs alter brain function. His collaborative work seeks to improve anesthesia delivery and recovery processes, addressing cognitive impairments often faced by patients post-surgery.

Paula Hammond’s innovative layer-by-layer assembly technique has led to the development of nanoparticles tailored for drug delivery, particularly targeting cancer cells. Her versatile materials are being explored for their capabilities in promoting wound healing and tissue regeneration.

Feng Zhang’s journey from studying optogenetics to advancing CRISPR technology reflects his commitment to harnessing molecular tools for genetic editing. His contributions have opened new avenues in understanding gene functions and correcting genetic disorders.
