MIT Tops 2024 Graduate Engineering and Business Rankings by U.S. News

MIT Campus

The latest annual rankings released by U.S. News and World Report have once again recognized the graduate program in engineering as the top choice, continuing MIT’s impressive streak since 1990 when these rankings first began.

MIT’s Dominance in Engineering Education

In addition to engineering, the MIT Sloan School of Management has also achieved a remarkable position, securing the fifth spot among the best graduate business programs, reflecting its strong reputation and educational excellence.

When evaluating individual engineering disciplines, MIT excels with first-place rankings in six key areas: aerospace/aeronautical/astronautical engineering, chemical engineering, computer engineering (tied with Stanford University and the University of California at Berkeley), electrical/electronic/communications engineering, materials engineering, and mechanical engineering. Moreover, the institute holds a commendable second place in biomedical engineering/bioengineering (tied with Duke University, Georgia Tech, and Stanford) and nuclear engineering.

Excellence in MBA Specializations

For MBA specialties, MIT shines brightly as well, achieving first place in four categories: business analytics, information systems, production/operations, and project management (tied with Carnegie Mellon University). It also ranks second in supply chain/logistics, showcasing its comprehensive approach to business education.

Ranking Methodology and Key Achievements

U.S. News formulates its rankings based on a combination of reputational surveys conducted among deans and academic officials and statistical indicators that reflect the quality of faculty, research output, and student accomplishments. In contrast, rankings for graduate programs in sciences, social sciences, and humanities are derived solely from reputational surveys.

Among the twelve peer-reviewed disciplines assessed this year, MIT has proudly claimed the top spot in computer science.
